Chronological Timeline of Morocco's Political History: from Antiquity to the Saadians

Chronological Timeline of Morocco’s History: from Antiquity to the Saadians
This free timeline aims to be a mausoleum of dates and dynasties. What you will find here is a visual and chronological reconstruction of Moroccan history, with an emphasis on the political dynamics that shaped the entire Maghreb region thorough the centuries. It tells the story of North Africa through Morocco’s lenses, across more than a thousand years : from Antiquity, ancient cultures and early Amazigh societies, through the arrival of Islam, to the rise and fall of dynasties that shaped the country’s political, religious and cultural foundations. It ends with the Saadians, whose rule closed a major chapter in Moroccan history. I chose not to include the Alaoui dynasty here, because it deserves its own timeline. Their story is long, complex, and still unfolding. It will be told in its own time, with the attention it deserves. This isn’t the work of a trained historian, as I do not hold any academic credentials in History. But it is that of someone with an obsession I could neither justify nor abandon. And so I read, searched, wrestled with different timelines, sometimes contradictory sources and accounts, late into the night with highlighters and tabs opened in ridiculous numbers. I conduct every piece of research with care and a deep sense of responsibility, as I am aware of the stakes this type of content brings. I read, I cross-check, compare sources which, as always, are listed at the end of the timeline (p.33).I am not a historian, but I am a Moroccan citizen and that is why this timeline is free. Not free as in cheap, but as in unmonetized. As I believe knowledge in History in places like Morocco where archives are can be hard to access, must belong to everyone. I wanted anyone (students, teachers, amateurs) to have a baseline of reference. So here it is! Free to download. Print it, annotate it, argue with it ; but above it all, use it like you would a lantern held up a long corridor, not a map.
